Wardruna Biography

Wardruna is a musical group from Norway that has been quite experimental in its way of approaching the old Norse traditions sonically. It was established in 2003 by Einar Selvik, Gaahl, and Lindy-Fay Hella. The band produces music from Nordic esoteric and cultural traditions. Wardruna makes use of ancient Nordic instruments aplenty like deer-hide frame drums, flutes, kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, and lur. They even employ nature sounds - trees, rocks, water, and torches - to craft an unearthly sonic experience that leads the listener backwards into the past.

The band's name is rich with significance, signifying "the guardian of secrets" or "she who whispers," mirroring their position as guardians of ancient knowledge propagated through song. Their initial three albums comprised the "Runaljod" trilogy, with each album inspired by Norse runes. With "Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga" in 2009 and "Runaljod – Yggdrasil" in 2013, they finished the trilogy in 2016 with "Runaljod – Ragnarok." The third album achieved a new level of success, climbing to No. 1 on Billboard's World Albums chart.

Wardruna also gained additional exposure through their contributions to the TV series "Vikings," where Selvik helped score the series from 2014 onwards. Selvik even appeared on the series, helping link Wardruna's music with Nordic cultural authenticity in mass media.

Since Gaahl left the group in 2015, Wardruna has continued with their music releasing their acoustic album "Skald" in 2018 and signing to world labels Sony Music/Columbia Records in 2019. They released their fifth album "Kvitravn" ("white raven") in 2021 and a live album in 2022. Despite having tour cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wardruna was back touring in 2022 and launched their 2024/2025 world tour at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison, Colorado.
