Zaz Biography

Isabelle Geffroy, better known as Zaz, turned French jazz into pure gold by mixing it with everything from soul to street music. This Tours native started out like a classic music kid, hitting the Conservatoire at age 6 for violin, piano, and choir. But clearly, she had different plans than becoming another classical musician. By 2001, she's belting it out with a blues band called "Fifty Fingers," then spends two years touring with a 16-piece Basque group called Izar-Adatz (that's "Shooting Star" in Basque, by the way). Picture this free spirit bouncing between studio gigs in Toulouse and street performances, soaking up everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Cuban rhythms.

Then 2010 hits, and boom - "Je veux" drops like a bomb on the French music scene. Télérama magazine called it right when they said she'd be the summer's revelation. Her self-titled debut album wasn't just a hit; it was a statement. Here's someone who could write sensitive ballads like "Trop sensible" and still throw down with the energy of a street performer.

She has made some big figures. Five million records all round the world! Two million outside France. But it's not only grids or graphs - she's everywhere, from Royal Albert Hall to Stade de France's Rugby World Cup opening ceremony. After globetrotting around from award shows in Berlin - to private parties hosted by walking banks in Munich - she won a prestigious prize in 2011 best music video international pop in Spain's Los Premios 40 Principales for "Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas." Just then between Echo Awards and turning down big money gigs to play more intimate surroundings (because that's what she likes), she's taking things her way.

Even cooler? She's using her success to make a difference through Zazimut, organizing festivals about sustainable living and happiness. And when she needed a break in 2019, she just straight up said she needed to feed Isa (that's her real self) instead of Zaz (the star). From conservatory kid to street performer to international sensation, Zaz proves that sometimes the best music comes from mixing everything you love into something totally new.
