A‐ha Biography
The synth-pop band formed in 82, A-ha gained popularity with their debut album released in 85, including hits like "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.", continuing with successful hits and albums throughout the years. A-ha went on hiatus after the release of the album "Memorial Beach" in 93 but came back by the early 2000s. As of today, A-ha is known for massive concert attendance and the band has sold over 100M units all over the world. Formed by Morten Harket, Paul Waaktaar, and Magne Furuholmen, the group moved from Norway to the UK to focus on their music career. A very curious fact is that the group of friends chose the name A-ha from a song title in Waaktaar's songbook.
A-ha's debut album, "Hunting High and Low," reached major success and had hits that became very popular in the United States, surpassing even Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in wins. With the massive success and popularity that came with their first album, the band expanded their success throughout Europe, the band's unique sound and groundbreaking videos solidified their place in music history, especially during the 1980s. By 86, only one year after their first album, A-ha released their second album, "Scoundrel Days," bringing more alternative rock vibes. Their second album wasn't as big as their debut album. "Stay on These Roads," A-ha's third album, sold over 4M copies and also included very successful hits.
Their 1993 album "Memorial Beach" was less successful, leading to a hiatus in 1994 as members pursued solo projects. After a hiatus in the early 90s, A-ha made a comeback in 98 and released "Minor Earth Major Sky" in 2000. Their 2009 album "Foot of the Mountain" marked a return to synth-pop. In 2010, they announced their disbandment after the "Ending on a High Note Tour," releasing a final compilation and live DVD. After the band broke up, some of their members worked on their solo projects, for example, Morten Harket released two solo albums.
In 2015, the band reunited and performed at Rock in Rio. By 2018, the synth-pop group toured Europe, and one year later, in 2019, they began the "Hunting High and Low" tour. By 2022, they released a new album and film, "True North," and the lead single "I'm In." In 2023, Billboard ranked A-ha's "Take On Me" as the 26th best pop song.
