Alphaville Concerts Setlist

Alphaville formed in Münster, Germany in 1982, taking its name from a Jean-Luc Godard film. British electronic acts like Gary Numan influenced the band's original members. Despite their limited musical abilities and basic equipment, they created demos in their basement studio. Little did they know they'd create songs that would end up in elevators and supermarkets decades later! After changing their name from "Forever Young" to "Alphaville," they released "Big in Japan" in 1984, a song Gold had written in 1979, and quickly found success.

Their breakthrough came with "Big in Japan" in 1984—ironically, a song Marian Gold had written five years earlier. It shot to number one across Europe and even cracked the UK Top 10. Their debut album "Forever Young" spawned more hits, including the title track, which would take on a life of its own, becoming an unexpected US hit when rereleased in 1988. Despite their success, Alphaville rarely hit the stage. They were studio creatures at heart, more comfortable crafting perfect pop in the control room than performing live. They've never even played a show in the UK, despite "Big in Japan" being their only hit there!

Alphaville went through plenty of changes since those early days. Frank Mertens left right after their debut, replaced by Ricky Echolette, and some few other line-up changes just like the good rock bands. But they keep evolving - in 2022, they even released "Eternally Yours," giving their classics the symphonic treatment with Gold's daughter Lily Becker joining him to promote it.
