Air Supply Biography

Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met while performing in "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Australia back in '75. One English guy, and one Aussie, both with killer voices created Air Supply, an Australian soft rock duo formed in 1975. Though they've had many other band members over the years, Russell and Hitchcock have always been the core of Air Supply. With their huge popularity, Air Supply has sold 100 million records worldwide.

The early days weren't exactly glamorous. Despite landing an Australian hit with "Love and Other Bruises," they were struggling to make ends meet. But everything changed when music industry legend Clive Davis heard "Lost in Love" in '79. He gave it the remix treatment, and suddenly Air Supply was soaring up the American charts. Their timing was perfect - America was ready for their brand of heart-melting harmonies.

The '80s belonged to Air Supply. They racked up eight top-five hits, including their crown jewel - the number-one smash "The One That You Love." They were everywhere, from "Solid Gold" to the radio waves, selling millions of records. Their "Greatest Hits" album alone moved 5 million copies in the US, powered by the epic "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" (courtesy of Jim Steinman, the genius behind Meat Loaf's biggest hits). Their popularity began to decline in the mid-1980s, though they still had some success with songs like "Just as I Am" in '85.

After releasing "Hearts in Motion" in '86 and a Christmas album a year later, the band took a break, during which Russell Hitchcock made a solo album and had a minor hit with a song from the movie "Arachnophobia." When the US charts cooled off in the mid-'80s, these guys didn't miss a beat - they just took their show on the road, especially in Asia where they remained huge. They even played to 175k fans in Cuba, wrapping up just before a hurricane hit.

These days, Air Supply's legacy is secure - they're in the ARIA Hall of Fame, their songs have been turned into musicals, and Rolling Stone Australia named them among the 50 greatest Australian artists ever. Not bad for two guys who met in a musical! With 100 million records sold worldwide, they proved that love songs never go out of style - they just soar higher with time.
