Richard Marx Biography
From singing jingles at five years old to being one of pop's most consistent hitmakers, Richard Marx has spent his whole life in music. Growing up in Chicago with a jazz musician dad who ran a jingle company, he got his start singing commercials for everything from dog food to candy bars.
His big break came when the teenage Marx sent his songs to Lionel Richie, who told the 17-year-old to try his luck in LA. Talk about good advice - by 1984, he'd scored his first number one as a songwriter with "What About Me?" recorded by Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, and James Ingram. One of his earliest LA connections was Fee Waybill of the Tubes, who became his lifelong best friend and godfather to his children.
When Marx stepped into the spotlight in 1987, he actually made history - he remains the only male artist whose first seven singles all reached Billboard's top 5. His self-titled debut went triple platinum, launching hits like "Don't Mean Nothing" and "Should've Known Better." Then came 1989's "Repeat Offender", which sold five million copies in the US alone and gave us the classic "Right Here Waiting."
Well into the '90s and beyond, Marx continued to grow. Scoring number ones in four different decades, he sold more than 30 million albums and gained respect as one of music's most reliable hitmakers. From writing for himself and others to producing or jumping in on duets, Marx has proved true talent never goes out of style.
The journey of Marx has shown how versatility and genuine craft can put together a long-lasting career in music. He is off to The Voice Australia, 2025, finding new ways to give out his musical wisdom to the next generation.
