André Rieu Biography

Born in Maastricht, in the NetherlandsAndré Rieu is a violinist, famous in every corner of the world for creating the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. André transformed classical music into a concert style, good enough to tour the whole world. André came from a family with a music background, his dad, Andries Antonie Rieu, influenced him to begin violin studies at age five.

While studying violin, André developed an early interest in orchestras. He trained at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège, Belgium, Conservatorium Maastricht, and the Music Academy in Brussels, earning a "Premier Prix" from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Married to Marjorie Kochmann since 1975, they have two sons. André speaks six languages: Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.

André Rieu created the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987, starting with 12 members and giving their first concert on 1 January 1988. By 2020, the orchestra grew to include 50 to 60 musicians. André plays a 1667 Stradivarius violin. He and his orchestra have toured Europe, the Americas, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2008, their tour featured a full-size reproduction of Empress Sisi's Castle, which was the largest stage to go on tour at that time.

Chris Boyd, a critic for Melbourne's Herald Sun, described André Rieu's stage presence as "blarney and delegation." In The Australian, Eamon Kelly criticized journalists for using stereotypes to dismiss André, noting that André's performances bring joy to millions and introduce many to classical music standards.

By 2008, André had earned his 100th platinum accreditation in Australia, and 3 years later, he had sold over $50 million in CDs and DVDs there, making him the highest-selling music artist in the Australian market from 2006 to 2011.
