Apocalyptica Biography
Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Apocalyptica is a symphonic metal band formed in 93 by Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen at Sibelius Academy. Apocalyptica started as a cover/tribute group for the thrash metal band Metallica in a very innovative way, including neoclassical metal style, using cellos instead of traditional guitars and bass. The band debuted with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos," released 3 years after the group was formed.
By 98, the band expanded into other horizons by making covers of bands like Sepultura along with some original tracks they had composed. From 1999 to 2009, Apocalyptica went through many lineup changes and released "Cult" in 2000. The album included original songs and some covers as well. By 2003, they released "Reflections," which had a more experimental sound with Dave Lombardo on drums. Two years later, they released their self-titled album.
Right after that, Slipknot's singer Corey Taylor was featured on their 2007 album, "Worlds Collide." The band gained significant success with "I Don't Care," topping US rock charts and appearing on TV shows like Smallville. They also joined Greenpeace's campaign in 2008. In 2011, Apocalyptica performed with Metallica but decided to take a break right after their world tour one year later.
During this time, they worked on some other parallel projects, and by 2015, they released "Shadowmaker" with Franky Perez on vocals. In 2016, the band celebrated their 20th anniversary since their debut. Since 2020, Apocalyptica has taken part in many other projects in the metal universe, working on projects with bands like Three Days Grace. In 2023, the symphonic metal band released "What We're Up Against," and in 2024 they went back to work on Metallica covers by releasing "Plays Metallica, Vol. 2," offering new Metallica covers like "The Four Horsemen" and "The Unforgiven II," along with a special version of "One" featuring James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo.
