From a kid making demos in his cousin's studio to leading a band that's sold 130M records, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and performing almost 3 thousand concerts for 34, fans across 50 countries - that's the legendary Jon Bon Jovi's American dream story. Back in '83, he was just a Jersey guy working at Power Station Studios, sneaking his song "Runaway" onto local radio. When it caught fire, he pulled together a band that would change rock history: David Bryan, Alec John Such, Tico Torres, and a guitarist named Richie Sambora. After a couple of warm-up albums, 1986's "Slippery When Wet" exploded like a powder keg. "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer" topped the charts, and suddenly those big hair dreams didn't seem so crazy anymore. "New Jersey" kept the hits coming with five Top 10 singles, though the endless touring nearly broke them - they needed a breather after Mexico in 1990.
The '90s saw them grow up, trading spandex for substance with "Keep the Faith" and scoring their longest-charting hit with "Always." The group lost Alec John Such in 1994, the band's bassist, but they kept evolving, even conquering country radio, which made them the first rock band to top Billboard's Country Chart. After releasing "What About Now" in 2013, Bon Jovi faced a major change when guitarist Richie Sambora left during their tour and was replaced by Phil X. In 2015, they released "Burning Bridges" as a fan album, followed by 2016's "This House Is Not for Sale," their first official album without Sambora. During this period, touring members Hugh McDonald and Phil X were promoted to full-time band members.
The band's legacy was recognized in 2018 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with both Sambora and original bassist Alec John Such rejoining them for the ceremony performance. The band faced several changes, including the death of original bassist Alec John Such in 2022 and speculation about Richie Sambora's return, which was ultimately dismissed in 2024. They released a holiday single "Christmas Isn't Christmas" in 2023 and their 16th album "Forever" in 2024, accompanied by a four-part documentary series "Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story" on Hulu and Disney+.
