Bowling for Soup is an American pop rock/punk band. They were founded in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1994. The founding members were lead vocalist and guitarist Jaret Reddick (born in 1972 in Grapevine, Texas), guitarist and backing vocalist Chris Burney (1969, Wichita Falls, Texas), bassist and backing vocalist Erik Chandler (1974, Henrietta, Texas), and drummer Lance Morrill.
Reddick ha known both Morrill and Burney from his childhood. However, when they started playing music seriously in their teens, they played in different bands. Burney and Chandler played in “The Folkadots,” while Reddick started a band named “Terminal Seasons”. However, they were all fans of 80’s popular metal music, such as Quiet Riot, RATT, and Mötley Crüe, and early punk rock such as Green Day.
Eventually, the three of them did end up playing all together in the band “coolfork!”. In the summer of 1994, they decided to form a band of their own, joined by Chandler, who played with Burney and Morrill in yet another music group - we don’t want to dump any more band names on you, however…
The name that does matter is the name of their new formation. They chose “Bowling for Soup,” which is a reference to a comedy skit by famous comedian Steve Martin, “Bowling for Shit”.
They did not have much success in their early years, so, in 1996, they relocated to Denton, Texas with a high college student population. There, they managed to accumulate a small underground following. In that time period, they also released two independently produced albums: the self-titled “Bowling for Soup” in September 1994 and “Rock on Honorable Ones!!” in January 1998. Also in 1998, their original drummer Morrill was replaced by Gary Wiseman.
The latter record, “Rock on Honorable Ones!!,” sold around 10,000 copies, which got the attention of the major music label Jive Records. They ended up signing Bowling for Soup in 2000. Their first professionally produced album under the new backing came out in May 2000, with the title “Let's Do It for Johnny!!”. However, it did not manage to break into the famous Billboard 200 albums chart in the US.
Their next record, however, “Drunk Enough to Dance” from August 2002, did make it to the Billboard 200, peaking at the #129 spot.
Since then, Bowling for Soup has released 7 more full-length studio albums, thus they have 11 total. The highest charting of them is “A Hangover You Don't Deserve” released in September 2004, which reached #37 on the Billboard 200 chart. Meanwhile, the latest new Bowling for Soup album is “Pop Drunk Snot Bread” from April 2022.
The band’s current line-up is made up of lead vocalist and guitarist Reddick, drummer Wiseman, and bassist Rob Felicetti. The biggest hits in the Bowling for Soup tracklist to date are “Girl All the Bad Guys Want” (2002), “1985” (2004), and “High School Never Ends” (2006). Frontman Reddick has stated publicly that the biggest regret of his music career is that “High School Never Ends” didn’t become a bigger hit.
