Boz Scaggs Concerts Setlist

William Royce "Boz" Scaggs is an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was born on June 8th, 1944 in Canton, Ohio. As a child, he moved to rural Texas with his World War II veteran father and the rest of his family. There, he learnt to play the cello. At age 12, he learnt to play the guitar as well, with help from the future famous guitarist and long-time music partner Steve Miller. Scaggs’ nickname, “Boz,” was coined by an elementary school friend who wanted it to stand out as unusual.

His music career started in his guitar mentor Miller’s band at the time, “Marksmen,” in 1959. The two also went to the same college in Madison, Wisconsin, where they continued to play together in various groups. However, Scaggs dropped out of school to pursue a career in music. He joined a short-lived R&B band in London, United Kingdom. After their dismantlement, he travelled through Europe, making his money as a street performer. He recorded his solo debut album titled “Boz” in Stockholm, Sweden in 1965, but it failed to gain any commercial success.

Upon returning to the United States, he reunited with his old friend Steve Miller. He played for the Steve Miller Band between 1967 and 1968, with whom he released two studio albums, both selling enough copies to chart on the famous Billboard 200 chart. However, tensions between Miller and himself prompted him to leave the band and re-start his solo career. 

In August 1969, he released his second solo record (the first produced in the US), “Boz Scaggs," through the major label Atlantic Records. It too had a lacklustre performance in sales.

Commercial success found Scaggs at last in 1976. He put out the album “Silk Degrees,” which ended up charting at #8 on the Billboard 200. Also, some of the musicians he assembled for the project - David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and David Hungate - went on to form the legendary rock band Toto in 1977 in Los Angeles, California.

Boz Scaggs has put out a total of 19 solo studio albums during his long and prolific career. The aforementioned “Silk Degrees” from 1976 and “Middle Man” from 1980 are the two best selling ones among them. Meanwhile, the latest new Boz Scaggs album came out in 2018, with the title “Out of the Blues”.

The biggest hits in the Boz Scaggs setlist to date are “Lowdown” (1976), “Lido Shuffle” (1977), and “Look What You've Done to Me” (1980). In 1988, he started the famous nightclub and music venue Slim’s in San Francisco, California, which operated until the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
