Toto Biography

Formed in Los Angeles, USA, Toto is a pop rock band that has released 14 studio albums and sold over 40 million records worldwide, as of today. The band is also known for winning several Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.

Toto's founding members are David Paich (keyboards, vocals) and Jeff Porcaro (drums). Later they recruited David Hungate (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards, vocals), and Bobby Kimball (vocals) for their debut album, which came out in 78.

Something curious is that the band members were session musicians for bands like Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs, formed in 1977. David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, both from musical families, met in high school and played in the band Rural Still Life.

After their first tour, the band released "Hydra," that had the song "99," inspired by George Lucas' film THX 1138. Steve Lukather later admitted he disliked "99," leading to it rarely being performed after the Hydra tour. The album went gold, and Toto embarked on the Hydra Tour, performing in the U.S. and internationally from February to June 1980.

In 1982, Toto's career peaked with the release of Toto IV, which went Triple Platinum. The album featured three Top 10 Billboard singles that topped the charts globally, those songs helped the band win six Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year.

In 85 the band went through some struggles, after the end of a tour, Fergie Frederiksen was let go due to difficulties meshing with the band. Joseph Williams, son of composer John Williams, was chosen as the new lead vocalist in early 1986. With Williams, Toto recorded and released Fahrenheit in October 1986, shifting back to their pop/rock roots.

Unfortunately, Jeff Porcaro tragically passed away in 1992, while working in his garden. According to reports from the county coroner's office attributed his death to a heart attack resulting from the hardening of the arteries, linked to his cocaine use.

In 1997, celebrating their 20th anniversary, David Paich and Steve Lukather sifted through old tapes and demos to compile a special album of unreleased songs. The resulting album, Toto XX, was released in 1998 featuring the single "Goin' Home." To promote the album, Toto embarked on a brief tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.

In 2003, toward the conclusion of their "25th Anniversary Tour," keyboardist David Paich took a hiatus from touring to care for a sick family member. Renowned keyboardist Greg Phillinganes stepped in as Paich's replacement for the remainder of the tour.

5 years later, amidst speculation and hints, Lukather confirmed on his official website that he had left Toto, stating, "The fact is yes I have left Toto. There is no more Toto. I just can't do it anymore and at 50 years old I wanted to start over and give it one last try on my own."

Despite all the controversy and struggles, Toto had a very successful journey, and to this day, the band is considered to be one of the most important bands in the realms of pop rock. Toto toured with Journey in early 2023, followed by several concerts in Japan during the summer.
