Brian Wilson Biography

Brian Douglas Wilson is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer. He was born on June 20, 1942 in Inglewood, California. Wilson’s mother was a part-time songwriter. His musical talent was discovered very early on, even possessing the ability of learning by ear, meaning he could recreate melodies after only hearing them once. He also has a perfect pitch - that one means he can sing back a note perfectly without any reference notes.

By age 7, he was singing solos in his church choir. Wilson learnt to play the accordion early on, then switched to the piano. Throughout his high school years, he performed at many school functions and family gatherings as a singer. He also played quarterback for the school football team. Sadly, an injury suffered from the abuse from his father early on in his life made him lose almost all hearing in his right ear. However, thankfully, that didn’t stop him from having an exceptional music career.

In 1961, aged 19, he, along with his brothers Carl and Dennis, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, formed a new musical group. Originally called “The Pendletones”, they became well-known throughout the world as the rock band “The Beach Boys”. Their first hit single was “Surfin' U.S.A.” from 1963. They became one of the first American rock bands to achieve long-term mainstream success in the era of the so-called “British Invasion”, when bands from the UK dominated the American music scene, spearheaded by the success of The Beatles. The Beach Boys, with Wilson on the lead vocals, have put out such classic hits over the years as “I Get Around” (1964), or “Good Vibrations” (1966).

Wilson has remained with The Beach Boys to this day (although not always touring with them), and put out a whopping 29 (!) full studio albums with the band. His debut album as a solo artist came out in July 1988, the self-titled “Brian Wilson”. He released a total of 12 records on his own. The latest new Brian Wilson album is from November 2019, with the title “Me at the Piano”. The biggest hits in the Brian Wilson setlist to date are “Love and Mercy” (1988), “Do It Again” (1995), and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” (2001).
