The Beach Boys were an American rock and pop band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961 by brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Blending 1950s rock and vocal group harmony into what became known as the "California sound," they are widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in rock history, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest artists of all time.
Signing with Capitol Records in 1962, the group's surf- and car-themed singles like "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfin' U.S.A." launched a five-year run of top 40 hits under Brian's songwriting and production.
By 1965, Brian withdrew from touring to focus on the studio, leading to the landmark 1966 album Pet Sounds and the single "Good Vibrations," both now considered among the greatest works in popular music.
The ambitious follow-up Smile was shelved in 1967, becoming rock's most legendary unreleased album, and the band's commercial fortunes cooled through the late '60s even as albums like Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971) won critical acclaim under Carl's leadership.
The band endured decades of internal strife, tragedy, and legal battles: Dennis drowned in 1983, Carl died of cancer in 1998, and disputes over the group's name eventually left Mike Love touring under the Beach Boys banner while other members pursued solo and side projects. A full reunion for the 50th anniversary album That's Why God Made the Radio (2012) proved short-lived, though Brian, Love, Jardine, and Bruce Johnston periodically regrouped for commemorations afterward.
Brian Wilson died in 2025, and following Johnston's departure from touring in 2026, Love continues to carry the Beach Boys name forward — a legacy built on over 100 million records sold and a catalog that still shapes pop, punk, and indie music alike.
