Clean Bandit Biography

Clean Bandit is an English electronic music group. They were formed in 2008 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The founding members were cellist, keyboardist, and vocalist Grace Chatto (born in 1985 in London, UK), violinist and keyboardist Neil Amin-Smith (1989), DJ and producer Jack Patterson (1985), and Jack’s brother, drummer Luke Patterson (1992).

The four founders met during their college years. At the time, Chatto and Amin-Smith played in the same string quartet. Not only did the four of them create the EDM group “Clean Bandit” in 2008, but Chatto and Jack Patterson even put together their own film production company in 2011 to make music videos for themselves and other artists as well. The band’s name, Clean Bandit, is a verbatim translation of the Russian term “чистой воды бандитка”, which is a phrase actually meaning something along the lines of “utter rascal”.

It took them 4 years to release their first single. However, it was worth the wait, as their debut single, “A+E” from 2012, managed to chart nationally in the UK. It peaked at #100 on the OCC singles chart; while their second released track, “Mozart’s House” from 2013, climbed all the way up to #17. Around this time, they started doing live Clean Bandit concert shows in major venues across the UK. Their first international hit was “Rather Be” featuring Jess Glynne which came out in January 2014 and reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart over in the United States.

In the same year, in May 2014, they released their debut album, “New Eyes”, through the major American label Atlantic Records. It peaked at #3 on the OCC chart in their home country of Britain, but only got to #180 on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. Since then, the British EDM group has only put out one more studio album. The latest new Clean Bandit album came out in November 2018, with the title “What is Love?”, paying homage to the 1993 dance classic by Haddaway.

The biggest hits in the Clean Bandit setlist to date are the aforementioned “Rather Be” (2014) featuring Jess Glynne, “Symphony” (2017) featuring Zara Larsson, “Rockabye” (2018) featuring Anne-Marie and Sean Paul, and “Solo” (also 2018) featuring Demi Lovato. After some changes, their current line-up is made up of three of the four co-founders, cellist Chatto, and the Patterson brothers, DJ and producer Jack and drummer Luke.
