Deep Purple Biography
Known for being not only pioneers of hard rock but mainly for their influence within the community, Deep Purple is a band formed in London in 1968. The band went through many changes in their style, but always inside the rock genre. Deep Purple started as a psychedelic band but switched to heavy metal in the 70s. Deep Purple is known as the "unholy trinity," together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Even through many line-up changes, with Ian Paice being the only constant member, Deep Purple today has a very deep influence and was once called the world's loudest band.
The story of the formation of the band is very interesting. In 67, Chris Curtis, former drummer for The Searchers, reached out to the businessman Tony Edwards to manage a new band called Roundabout, envisioned as a supergroup with rotating members. The first recruit was Jon Lord, who brought in bassist Nick Simper, who suggested guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who joined after being persuaded by the management. Curtis quickly left the group but the rest continued, later bringing Ian Paice.
One year after that, in 1968, Deep Purple released their first debut album "Shades of Deep Purple." They quickly followed with "The Book of Taliesyn," featuring "Kentucky Woman," which did pretty well in North America.
From 69 to 74, Deep Purple went through Deep Purple Mark II and Deep Purple Mark III. An interesting fact is that Deep Purple even approached Paul Rodgers, but he declined to form the band Bad Company.
The album "Burn," which marked the first album of Deep Purple Mark III was released in 74 and was a huge success and had a more progressive rock style.
10 years later, in 1984, Deep Purple brought back Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover from Deep Purple Mark II and released albums with a new record label. Their comeback album, "Perfect Strangers," was recorded in Vermont, and released that same year in 1984. "Perfect Strangers" was a commercial success, reaching number 5 in the UK and number 12 in the U.S. The album's most notable song is definitely "Knockin' At Your Back Door," but of course, we can forget about the single with the same name as the album: "Perfect Strangers."
Steve Morse's arrival in Deep Purple revitalized the band creatively, leading to the release of "Purpendicular" in 1996. Deep Purple followed up with the harder-sounding "Abandon" in 1998.
In 2022, Steve Morse took a hiatus from Deep Purple to care for his wife, who was diagnosed with cancer. Simon McBride, formerly of Sweet Savage, joined Deep Purple to back Steve Morse's up. Unfortunately, Steve Morse left the band later that same year, but the good news was that the band announced plans for a new album.
In 2023, the long-awaited new album, called "=1," was announced to be released in 2024, marking Deep Purple's twenty-third studio album and the first with McBride. A 2024 tour, "=1 More Time," was announced, with Jefferson Starship and Reef as special guests for the Europe and UK dates, respectively.
