Uriah Heep Biography

One of the most recognizable names in the genre since forming in London back in 1969, Uriah Heep was one of those pioneers of hard rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock-named after a character in Charles Dickens' novel David Copperfield-that sold over 40 million albums worldwide. Songs like "Lady in Black," "Easy Livin'," and "The Wizard" were staples of rock radio.

It started when 19-year-old guitarist Mick Box formed a band called Hogwash, which developed into Spice and finally Uriah Heep. While this band has always had a lot of contributors, Box seems to be that one creative voice that has directed the group through the various phases of rock history.

Their early-1970s albums, particularly "Demons and Wizards" and "The Magician's Birthday", defined the emerging heavy metal sound through a combination of thunderous riffs, soaring vocals, and progressive rock complexity. The band was unique for their extensive use of keyboard-driven melodies and harmonized vocals at a time when most heavy rock bands depended on guitars alone.

In 1987, Uriah Heep took another record and were the very first Western rock band in Gorbachev's perestroika times and performed a full ten shows within a running streak at Olympic Stadium in Moscow, with about 180k people attended that opened practically for the entire western music further on behind Iron curtain.

Even with many line-up changes during the years, and sometimes even changing musical trends, plus endless touring, this band still managed to be prolific. If counted correctly, it has released twenty-five studio albums, the last of which is the 2023 album "Chaos & Colour". Long-running and influential, it has attained a loyal following, mostly in Europe, where it regularly plays arenas.

In 2024, after 55 years of touring and recording, Uriah Heep announced "The Magician's Farewell" tour, intending to spend two to three years celebrating with fans around the world. In all the changes in music, they keep their sound unique yet manage to change with the times and proved one thing-true rock 'n' roll never goes out of style.
