Doja Cat Biography

Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, better known by her stage name Doja Cat, is an American singer and rapper. She was born on October 21, 1995 in Los Angeles, California. Dlamini was born into an artistic family: her mother is a graphic designer, while her father is an actor-musician. However, she has claimed in the past that she never met her dad, but that claim was denied by her father. In her childhood, she lived in a Hindu commune founded by a Jazz musician, where she started singing in a temple. After her family moved out of the commune, she started taking dance lessons, which she was a lot more interested in than school. As a teenager, she joined a professional street dance troupe.

She attended a performing arts high school but dropped out at age 16. After dropping out, she spent all of her time home alone on the internet. She browsed the popular sites Ebaum’s World and MySpace, as well as started creating her own music and uploading it to Soundcloud. Doja Cat soon got immersed in the LA underground hip hop scene, performing at parties and freestyle sessions known as “ciphers”. A producer found her Soundcloud account, and introduced her to Yeti Beats, a major hip hop music producer in Los Angeles. They recorded a few songs together in Yeti Beats’ studio. As a result, Doja Cat was singed by Kemosabe Records in 2014.

Her debut EP (Extended Play) came out in August 2014, with the title “Purrr!”. Due to a year-long hiatus Doja Cat attributed to a “creative limbo”, her debut album didn’t come out until March 2018. It was titled “Amala”, and ended up being a moderate hit, peaking at the #138 spot on Billboard 200. The two other albums that she put out since, however, performed a lot better on the charts. “Hot Pink” from November 2019 reached the #9, while “Planet Her” from June 2021 reached the #2 spot on Billboard 200.

Doja Cat’s biggest hits to date are “Juicy” (2018) featuring Tyga, “Say So” (2019), “Boss B*tch” (2020), and “Kiss Me More" (2021) featuring SZA. Her emergence into internet culture still has an effect on her career, as she regularly puts out content that goes viral on social media sites, especially TikTok. Her TikTok account has over 26 million followers.
