Eagles Biography
Eagles is an American rock band. They were formed in 1971 in Los Angeles, California. The founding members were lead vocalist and guitarist Glenn Frey (born in 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, passed away in 2016), vocalist, drummer, and rhythm guitarist Don Henley (1947, Gilmer, Texas), guitarist and banjo player Bernie Leadon (1947, Minneapolis, Minnesota), and bassist Randy Meisner (1946, Scottsbluff, Nebraska).
Frey and Henley were originally recruited by solo rock star Linda Ronstadt to play in her backup band. They were later joined by Leadon and Meisner to complete the line-up. While backing for Ronstadt on her tour, the four men came up with the idea to form a band of their own. They shared their intentions with Ronstadt who was supportive towards them. The new group was signed by the new label Asylum Records in 1971, even before they recorded any music. They named their group “Eagles”, after they saw some of those birds fly around during a night of drinking out in the California desert. The same year as their foundation, 1971, they gave an early Eagles concert show at the world-famous Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
Their self-titled debut album, “Eagles”, came out in February 1972. It became a hit, peaking at the #22 spot on Billboard 200 upon its release, and eventually selling 1 million copies in the US alone, officially going Platinum. The standout tracks on the record were “Take It Easy” and “Witchy Woman”.
The Californian rock band put out 5 more albums between 1973 and 1979. The biggest hit among those, “Hotel California” from December 1976, became one of the best selling albums of all time, having sold a whopping 42 million copies worldwide.
By 1980, however, tensions within the band boiled over to the point where singer-guitarist Glenn Frey and guitarist Don Felder nearly got into a fist fight on stage at a live Eagles concert in Long Beach, California. After the incident, the band broke up, and didn’t get back together until 1994, over a decade later. However, they’ve been sticking together since, although with a changing line-up, and put out one more new Eagles album in October 2007, titled “Long Road Out of Eden”.
The biggest hits in the Eagles setlist to date are “Hotel California” (1976, same title as their album), “New Kid in Town” (also 1976), “I Can’t Tell You Why” (1979), and “Seven Bridges Road” (1980). After many changes over the many years, their current line-up is made up of the sole remaining founder, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and drummer Don Henley; as well as lead guitarist and keyboardist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, and guitarist and vocalist Vince Gill. The Eagles is one of the best selling bands of all time, having sold over 200 million copies of their records throughout their career. They were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
