Jackson Browne Biography

Clyde Jackson Browne is an American singer, songwriter, and political activist. He was born on October 9, 1948 in Heidelberg, Germany. Browne was born to the family of an American serviceman writing for the army newspaper “Stars and Stripes”, stationed in Germany. When he was 3, he and his family moved back to the US, settling down in Los Angeles, California. As a teenager, he gave early Jackson Browne concert shows as a folk singer at the Troubadour Club in West Hollywood.

After graduating from high school, he joined the “Nitty Gritty Dirt Band”, a country rock group out of Long Beach, CA. Browne played as a vocalist and guitarist for them, but only for less than a year. Instead, he moved to New York, where he became a staff writer of the publishing company Nina Music, affiliated with the major label Elektra Records. He also performed as a backing singer for artists like Tim Buckley and Nico from The Velvet Underground. Browne and Nico even dated for a while and he also wrote some songs for her.

Browne’s debut album as a solo artist was the self-titled folk rock record “Jackson Browne”, released in January 1972. It became a moderate hit, peaking at #53 on the famous Billboard 200 chart. Since then, the prolific folk rock musician has put out 14 more studio albums during his long career, thus he has 15 in total. The best selling one of them is “Running on Empty” from December 1977, which he wrote and recorded while being on a Jackson Browne concert tour for the whole time. It ended up selling 7 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Jackson Browne album came out in July 2021, with the title “Downhill from Everywhere”.

The biggest Jackson Browne hits to date are “Doctor My Eyes” (1972), “The Pretender” (1976), “Stay” (1977), and “Somebody's Baby” (1982). Browne is also known for his activism, promoting causes like environmental protection and opposition to nuclear testing.
