Fleetwood Mac Biography

Fleetwood Mac is a British rock band. They were founded in London, United Kingdom in 1967. The founding members were drummer Mick Fleetwood (born in 1947 in Redruth, United Kingdom), guitarist Peter Green (1946, London, United Kingdom), and second guitarist Jeremy Spencer (1948, Hartlepool, United Kingdom).

Green left the successful British blues band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in 1967. Green, McVie, and Fleetwood had played together in multiple different bands before, including the most recent Bluesbreakers. Green, Fleetwood, and McVie had recorded 5 songs in their free time together even before Green left the blues band. With Green’s departure, he suggested to the two of them to form a new band. McVie was hesitant to leave his steady job with their old blues group. Therefore, Green decided to incorporate his nickname into the new band’s name: that’s how the name “Fleetwood Mac” came about, after the names of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.

However, the ruse didn’t work, so Green and Fleetwood had to recruit Bob Brunning as a new bass player, after they already had Spencer join as a guitarist. The new bandonly played a few early Fleetwood Mac concert shows in 1967 before McVie changed his mind at last and replaced Brunning on the bass.

Their debut album, the self-titled “Fleetwood Mac”, came out in February 1968. This blues-rock record became a hit, peaking at the #4 spot on the Official Albums Chart in the UK, while also breaking into the Billboard 200 list over in the US, at the #198 spot. By the end of the year, the new band saw even more success. In November 1968, they released their first single that reached the top of the charts in multiple European countries. “Albatross” was a massive hit, despite not having any lyrics, only a guitar instrumental. By that time, one of the original guitarists, Spencer was replaced by an 18-year-old self-taught guitar talent Danny Kirwan.

Over the next decades, Fleetwood Mac was gradually getting away from their blues roots: for the past decades, mostly rock songs are being played at a Fleetwood Mac concert. During the band’s long career, which included a 2-year hiatus between 1995 and 1997, they have released a total of 18 studio albums. The best selling one among them is their 11th one, “Rumours” from February 1977. It sold a staggering 40 million copies worldwide, putting it in the top 10 best selling albums of all time by any artist. Meanwhile, the latest new Fleetwood Mac album came out in April 2003, with the title “Say You Will”.

The British blues-rock band’s biggest hits to date are “Dreams” (1977), “Go Your Own Way” (also 1977), “Gypsy” (1982), and “Big Love” (1987). Their current line-up consists of the sole remaining founder, Mick Fleetwood on the drums, bassist John McVie, John McVie’s wife Christine McVie as the vocalists and keyboardist, vocalist Stevie Nicks, lead guitarist Mike Campbell, and vocalist and rhythm guitarist Neil Finn.
