Fontaines D.C. Biography

Fontaines D.C. is a post-punk band from Dublin, Ireland, formed in 2014. Their members include the lead vocalist, Grian Chatten, guitarists Conor Curley and Carlos O'Connell, the band's bassist, Conor "Deego" Deegan III, and the drummer, Tom Coll. These five friends met while attending a music college called BIMM, which is located in the Liberties area of Dublin, where they all shared a passion for poetry, even publishing two chapbooks of poetry before turning their attention to music.

Their band's title was inspired by the character of Johnny Fontane from the movie "The Godfather," but they added "D.C." for Dublin City, since another band from Los Angeles had already taken the name.

Their first album, "Dogrel" (2019), was released to much acclaim: Album of the Year at the Rough Trade and BBC 6 Music Awards, and a Mercury Prize nomination. It was described by The Guardian as a “perfect debut.”

Their second album, "A Hero’s Death" (2020), was made on the road and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. It narrowly failed to reach No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, held off by Taylor Swift’s move of the release date of her album "Folklore."

"Skinty Fia" (2022) was a significant step forward: the album reached No. 1 on the UK and Irish Albums Charts and gave the band the Brit Award for International Group.

Their fourth album, "Romance" (2024), marked a move to XL Recordings. It sold twice the first-week sales of its predecessor and gave the band its first entry on the US Billboard 200 Chart. It was also nominated for two Grammy Awards and the Rolling Stone UK Album Award.
