Gregory Porter Biography

Born in Sacramento but raised in Bakersfield, Gregory Porter found his voice in church, where his minister mother Ruth pushed him to sing. His dad wasn't around much - saw him maybe a few days total - but that absence would later fuel some powerful music. Football almost took him down a different path. He landed a scholarship to San Diego State as a lineman, but a shoulder injury changed those plans. Then at 21, he lost his mom to cancer. Her last words to him? "Sing, baby, sing!" He took that to heart.

Landing in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood in 2004, Porter worked as a chef at his brother's restaurant, singing when he could. Those local gigs at spots like St. Nick's Pub built him a band and a following. His 2010 debut "Water" turned heads, but 2013's "Liquid Spirit" changed everything - Grammy win, UK gold record, the kind of success jazz albums rarely see.

That voice of his? It's like warm honey - a baritone so smooth it had critics scrambling for metaphors. He can swing from jazz to soul to gospel without breaking a sweat. The Telegraph called him "the oddest pop star on the planet" after his Glastonbury set, but that's part of his charm - this guy in his signature cap (there's a story there, but he keeps it private) just letting that incredible voice do the talking.

Through Grammy wins, Royal Albert Hall shows, and even cooking shows, and performances for the Queen's Jubilee, Porter's kept it soulful and real.
