IDLES Biography

IDLES is an English post-punk and punk rock band. They were founded in Bristol, United Kingdom in 2009. The founding members were lead vocalist Joe Talbot (born in 1984 in Newport, Wales), bassist Adam Devonshire, lead guitarist Mark Bowen, rhythm guitarist Andy Stewart, and drummer Jon Harper.

Talbot and Devonshire met as teenagers while attending school in Exeter, United Kingdom. They also went to the same college, the University of the West of England, where they decided to start a band. They were joined by Bowen, whom they met at the local DJ scene after opening up a small bar in Bristol, and who is actually a dentist by trade.

They released their debut EP (Extended Play) with the title "Welcome EP" and featuring four tracks in 2012, with an extended line-up that included Stewart and Harper as well. It failed to gain any significant commercial traction. However, the band kept grinding, putting on small IDLES concert shows, and slowly building their audience through word of mouth.

They put out their debut album titled “Brutalism” in March 2017, through the indie labels Partisan Records and Balley Records. It ended up becoming a moderate success, reaching the #65 spot on the British OCC albums chart. By that time, Jon Beavis had replaced Harper on the drums; and Lee Kiernan had replaced Stewart on the rhythm guitar.

Since then, Talbot and his crew have put out 4 more full-length studio albums, thus they have 5 in total. The best selling of them is “Ultra Mono” from September 2020, which sold 60,000 copies in their home country of the UK alone, and topped the OCC albums chart as well. Meanwhile, the latest new IDLES album came out in February 2024, with the title “Tangk”. It too has climbed to the top of the OCC chart; however, it took it fewer sold copies to do so.

The biggest hits in the IDLES setlist to date are “Mother” (2017), “Colossus” (2018), “Danny Nedelko” (also 2018), and “Dancer” (2024). The band is known for their energetic, often chaotic live IDLES concert shows, which are often described in the music press as having a unique atmosphere. They are also known for their political lyrics, which promote progressive causes, such as mass immigration and feminism.
