Born from an Italian father and a half-Polish, half-German mother, Jack Savoretti grew up bouncing around Europe with what he describes as a "transatlantic mutt" accent. Who would think that this kid poet's Christmas gift-a guitar-would shape him into being one of Britain's most emotive voices?
Starting in 2006, Savoretti wasn't some guy with a guitar. The first single "Without" immediately caught the eye of BBC Radio 2, and then he went on tour with Corinne Bailey Rae. It was never an overnight sensation-either, he had ground his way around for years playing everywhere from the Caffè Nero bars upwards to TV shows, with his songs quietly sliding into everything from One Tree Hill to Sons of Anarchy.
But the real breakthrough came in 2019 when "Singing to Strangers" reached number one in the UK. Talk about playing the long game! He followed that with the release in 2021 of "Europiana," proving the first time is not a fluke and yielding another chart-topper. By 2024, he was doing a complete volte-face with "Miss Italia," mostly singing in Italian and teaming up with artists like Zucchero and Natalie Imbruglia.
What differentiated Savoretti, however, was not just the music alone but how these stories are narrated-from London's Hammersmith Apollo all the way down to the very heart of Italy's Portofino-he still brings that very poetic soul which he once brought when writing beneath trees as a teenager. As recently as today, with an emotive performance of "Soldier's Eyes" to remember the 80th anniversary of D-Day, it is a reassuring feature and one that seems not to be lost on the music to this day.
