Joseph Satriani, also known by his stage name, Joe Satriani, is a famous rock music guitarist and composer. Joe started as a guitar instructor, teaching famous musicians like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett from Metallica. But by the mid-80s, Joe launched his career and became the bestselling instrumental rock guitarist with over 10M albums sold. Gaining popularity all over the world, Joe toured with Mick Jagger and later with Deep Purple in the late 80s. He also founded the G3 tour in 1995 and has been part of the supergroup Chickenfoot since 2008. Throughout his commercial success and high sales, Joe is also known for his technical prowess on the guitar, often hailed as a top virtuoso.
Joe was born in Westbury, New York, inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Joe decided to become a guitarist. By the late 70s, he moved to Berkeley to further his music career and continued teaching future famous guitarists. In the late 70s, Joe formed the band Squares and later joined the Greg Kihn Band, which helped him pay off debts from his debut album. Joe's album "Surfing with the Alien," released in 87 was a major hit and marked the beginning of many successful albums yet to come. In 93, Joe Satriani briefly toured with Deep Purple but declined a permanent spot. In 2007, "Surfing with the Alien" was re-released for its 20th anniversary.
He joined the supergroup Chickenfoot in 2008, releasing two albums. Satriani filed a copyright suit against Coldplay in 2008, which was dismissed in 2009. By 2015, Joe announced one more world tour to support his album "Shockwave Supernova," followed by "What Happens Next," released in 2018. In 2024, he joined Steve Vai and Eric Johnson for a G3 "Reunion" tour and released a single with Vai, "The Sea of Emotion, Pt.1."
Technically speaking, Joe excels in techniques like legato, two-handed tapping, arpeggio tapping, volume swells, harmonics, and extreme whammy bar effects. His legato technique, using hammer-ons and pull-offs, creates smooth, flowing runs, and he's skilled in rapid alternate and sweep picking. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, and many other legends like Eric Clapton.
