Kodaline Biography
Steve Garrigan and Vincent May started their musical partnership in Colaiste Choilm CBS school days-literally cutting their teeth in local battle-of-the-band competitions. What began as teenage ambition grew into Kodaline, one of Ireland's most compelling rock bands. They burst onto the public scene in 2006 with 21 Demands on RTÉ's You're a Star and finished runners-up. But that early taste of success hinted at bigger things to come with their independent single "Give Me a Minute" making history as the first independently released track to top the Irish Singles Chart.
The real transformation, however, came in 2012 when it became Kodaline, and Jason Boland joined the bunch in finding their sound. Their self-named EP drew the attention of BBC Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton, and soon their emotive single "All I Want" featured on Grey's Anatomy and Google's Year in Review, unveiling their music to a worldwide audience.
Their 2013 debut "In a Perfect World" introduced their gift of heart-on-sleeve songwriting to the world, with the likes of "High Hopes" and "Love Like This" finding their ways through the borders of Ireland to everywhere else. Its songs became very much unexpected stars themselves, from "Perfect World" becoming the theme tune for hit show Gogglebox, their music popping up everywhere from The Vampire Diaries to The Fault in Our Stars.
Every subsequent album - "Coming Up for Air" in 2015, "Politics of Living" in 2018, "One Day at a Time" in 2020-perfects their now-fine blend while holding dear the emotional intimacy they're becoming synonymous with. Singles like "Brother" and "Follow Your Fire" have shown growth not detached from that brutal honesty that originally led people to identify with their songs.
The 2022 live album "Our Roots Run Deep", recorded at Dublin's historic Olympia Theatre, brought things full circle: showcasing a band that had grown from local heroes to international success while never forgetting where they came from.
