Imagine Dragons Biography

Imagine Dragons is an American electropop-indie pop band founded in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008. The founding members are vocalist Dan Reynolds (born in 1987 in Las Vegas), drummer Andrew Tolman (1986, American Fork, UT), keyboardist and guitarist Andrew Beck (1986), bassist Dave Lemke (1983), and keyboardist and violinist Aura Florence.

Lead singer Reynolds and drummer Andrew Tolman both attended Bringham Young University in Provo, Utah. In 2008, at age 22 and 23, respectively, they decided to form a band. They managed to recruit the 3 other founding members listed above. The name "Imagine Dragons" was settled on fairly quickly in the band, and they’ve stuck with it ever since. They claim it is an anagram for a phrase they are not yet willing to disclose.

In October 2009, the fresh band got a lucky break. After the band Train had to cancel a show at a major Las Vegas music festival due to their front man’s illness, Dan Reynolds and his team got to fill in and perform for an audience of 26,000 people. Their fill-in gig was met with a positive reception.

In their first few years, Imagine Dragons released a handful of independently produced EP’s and kept performing live shows in Utah. 3 years after their formation, in 2011, they signed their first contract with a major music label, Interscope Records.

In 2012, their single “It’s Time” reached the #15 spot on the famous Billboard Hot 100 list. The Imagine Dragons' debut album came out in September 2012 with the title “Night Visions”. By that time, only Reynolds and Tolman remained from the original line-up. They were joined by guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and keyboardist Brittany Tolman (Andrew Tolman’s wife). Their first album became a massive success, peaking at #2 on Billboard’s charts. It sold around 7 million copies worldwide. Their second one, “Smoke + Mirrors” from 2015, didn’t stop until it hit #1 upon release.

Since then, the band has released 3 more studio albums, thus they have 5 in total. The best selling one among them has remained the first one they released, “Night Visions”. Their most recent project is "Mercury – Act 2", released in July 2022.

The biggest Imagine Dragons hits to date are “Radioactive” (2012), “Demons” (2013), “Thunder” (2017), and “Believer” (also 2017). Their current line-up is made up of lead singer Dan Reynolds (the sole founding member still on board), guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman. They are still based in Las VegasTheir signature single “Radioactive” holds the record for most weeks charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
