OneRepublic is an American pop rock band. They were formed in 2002 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The founding members were lead vocalist Ryan Tedder (born in 1979 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) and lead guitarist and violist Zach Filkins (1978, Colorado Springs, Colorado).
The two founders met each other in senior year of high school in Colorado Springs. They bonded over their similar taste in music, with a shared love for artists like Fiona Apple, Peter Gabriel, and U2. They originally decided to form a band back in 1996. They performed a few shows under the name “This Beautiful Mess”. However, after graduating from high school, they attended different colleges so their band was left behind.
Tedder got a degree in public relations and advertising from Oral Roberts University. He worked his way up from an internship at DreamWorks SKG, while also winning a songwriter talent contest run by NSYNC’s Lance Bass. When he relocated to Los Angeles in 2002, he already had plenty of “cred” in the music industry. He asked his old high school friends Filkins to join him to give their band another try.
Filkin obliged, and their new band “Republic” was formed, with an extended line-up of Eddie Fisher on drums, Brent Kutzle on bass and cello, and Drew Brown on guitar. They started doing early OneRepublic concert shows in the LA area. Within 9 months, they were signed by Columbia Records. However, they were advised to change their name to “OneRepublic” to avoid legal trouble from similarly named musical acts. They also started to gain traction on the late social media site MySpace. However, within months of their first album coming out, they were dropped by Columbia, just to be picked up by another label, Mosley Music Group, soon after.
Thus, OneRepublic’s debut album came out in November 2007 with the title “Dreaming Out Loud”. It became quite a hit, peaking at the #14 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, while reaching the #2 spot on the OCC chart over in the UK. The next year, they went on their first international OneRepublic concert tour, the “Tag This Tour”.
Since then, the pop-rock band has put out 4 more studio albums, thus they have 5 in total. The best selling one among them is “Native” from March 2013, which sold around 2 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new OneRepublic album came out in August 2021, with the title “Human”.
The biggest hits in the OneRepublic setlist to date are “Secrets” (2009), “Good Life” (also 2009), and “Counting Stars” (2013). They were also featured on the 2007 hit song by Timbaland (the owner of the label that published their first album), “Apologize”. After some changes, OneRepublic’s line-up consists of the two founders, lead vocalist Tedder and lead guitarist and violinist Filkins, as well as rhythm guitarist Drew Brown, drummer Eddie Fisher, bassist Brent Kutzle, and keyboardist Brian Willett.
Counting Stars should be their most played song during concerts

What I love about OneRepublic is that they are always touring all over the world. Unlike some other bands that only tour in the Americas or Europe, I understand it's often a matter of money and audience, but it's a bit disheartening to see even renowned global bands limiting their tours to Europe
