Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, better known by his stage name Kygo, is a Norwegian DJ and music producer. He was born on September 11, 1991 in Singapore. Kygo was born to Norwegian parents living in the South Asian city-state of Singapore. The family moved back to Norway, to the city of Tønsberg, while he was a child. He learnt to play the piano at age 6. At age 15, he switched to electronic music, producing songs with the now-discontinued software Logic Studio and a MIDI Keyboard. His biggest early influence was the Swedish EDM artist Avicii. Kygo was studying business and finance at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, but dropped out to pursue music as a full-time career. His stage name is made up of the first two letters of his first and last names.
He released his debut single, “Epsilon”, in 2013. His 2014 single, “Firestone” featuring Conrad Sewell went viral, eventually amassing hundreds of millions of plays on YouTube and Spotify. As a result, he was contacted by his teen hero Avicii, as well as Chris Martin, who asked him to remix the 2014 hit by the British rock band Coldplay, “Midnight”. The same year, he got to go on his first international Kygo concert tour, the “Endless Summer Tour”. Kygo’s song “ID” from 2015 was featured on the soundtrack of the popular soccer video game FIFA 16.
His debut album came out in May 2016, with the title “Cloud Nine” and through the labels Sony Music and Ultra Music. It became a massive hit, topping Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart in the US, while also reaching the #11 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart. Since then, the Scandinavian DJ has released 2 more studio albums, thus he has 3 in total. The best selling one among them is his first one, “Cloud Nine” from 2016, which sold 1.2 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Kygo album came out in May 2020, with the title “Golden Hour”.
The biggest hits in the Kygo setlist to date are the aforementioned “Firestone” (2014) featuring Conrad Sewell, “Stole The Show” (2015) featuring Parson James, “It Ain’t Me” (2017) featuring Selena Gomez, and “Happy Now” featuring Sandro Cavazza.
