The Killers Biography

The Killers is an American rock band. They were founded in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001. The founding members were lead singer, keyboardist and bassist Brandon Flowers (born in 1981 in Henderson, Nevada), and lead guitarist and backing vocalist Dave Keuning (1976, Pella, Iowa).

Flowers was originally in a synth-pop band called “Blush Response” but he got fired from that gig in 2001. Inspired by an Oasis concert, he decided to form a rock band around himself as his next career step. So, he posted an ad in a Las Vegas newspaper, which caught the attention of Keuning, a young guitarist who just moved to Vegas from Iowa. They quickly bonded, and named their new band “The Killers” after a fictional band that was shown in a music video for a song by the English rock band New Order.

Drummer Matt Norcross was the next addition to their line-up, and the three of them recorded two songs for a demo tape. After bassist Dell Neal joined, they made two more songs. They also started performing the earliest versions of a The Killers concert at open mic nights in Vegas bars. They were ultimately discovered by Braden Merrick, an A&R rep for Warner Bros. Records who found one of their demo tapes on the internet. He went out to Las Vegas to see their live show, and was equally impressed.

In June 2004, The Killers’ debut album “Hot Fuss” was released by Island Records. It became a massive hit, peaking at the #7 spot on the Billboard 200 list. The standout track on the record was “Mr. Brightside”. At that point, the band members were the two co-founders, Flowers and Keuning, as well as Mark Stoermer on the bass and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. on the drums.

Since then, the Vegas-based rock band has released 6 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them so far has been their first one, “Hot Fuss”, which sold 7 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new The Killers album is titled “Pressure Machine”, which came out in August 2021. They enjoy a special level of popularity over in the UK, where all seven of their albums have topped the local OCC charts.

The biggest hits to date in The Killers setlist are the aforementioned “Mr. Brightside” (2004), “Somebody Told Me” (also 2004), “When You Were Young” (2006), and “Human” (2008). The band is still together, however, the two founders, Flowers and Keuning, have taken long hiatuses from touring, while also working on solo projects and even on projects with other bands.
