The Kooks proved to the whole industry that the BRIT School is not some sort of pop factory. Back in 2004, Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, and their then-bandmates took a joke shopping trip to Primark and launched one of the most enduring British indie success stories.
These lads from Brighton didn't hang about: Virgin Records signed them just three months into their career. What an excellent beginning! Inside In/Inside Out, their 2006 debut, served as a tsunami to the music charts, reaching quadruple platinum in the UK and launching hits such as "Naïve" and "She Moves in Her Own Way" that still get indie kids dancing nowadays.
As for their sound, it is a style of 1960s British Invasion infused with modern indie rock, sprinkled with touches of reggae, ska, and lately, even funk and hip-hop tossed in. While other bands from the same era slowly withered away, meanwhile, The Kooks only kept evolving. From topping the charts with "Konk" in 2008 to experimental overtures in "Listen" and "10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark", they never blinked in the face of change.
Through lineup changes-they've burned through bassists like Spinal Tap burns through drummers-and shifting musical trends, Pritchard and Harris have kept the spirit of The Kooks alive. Their story has had it all: from rapid rises to fame, MTV Europe Award wins, and Brit nominations-all the way most importantly, to their ability to keep growing nearly two decades on.
What started as an intra-school project between some BRIT School kids has panned out to be one of British indie's most resilient success stories. From packed festivals to sweaty intimate gigs, The Kooks proved that guitar music never really dies, it just keeps getting reinvented.
