Snow Patrol Biography

Ever heard of a band called Shrug? Probably not, but you might know them better as Snow Patrol. Back in '94, Gary Lightbody started playing pub gigs in Dundee, Scotland, probably never dreaming his little university band would become a global phenomenon. The early days were rough — we're talking playing to 18 people in a strip club rough. After changing their name twice and getting dropped by their first label, things were so tight that Lightbody had to sell his record collection just to keep the band going. But during these lean times, they wrote "Run," though they didn't know yet that this song would change everything.

Their luck turned in 2002 when they added guitarist Nathan Connolly (fresh from his day job at a music store) and signed with Polydor Records. "Final Straw" arrived in 2003, and suddenly those days of empty clubs were over. They even ended up touring with the rock giant U2. Then came "Chasing Cars" in 2006, and everything exploded. Thanks to a little boost from "Grey's Anatomy," the song became inescapable — eventually crowned the most-played track of the 2000s in the UK. Their album "Eyes Open" was extremely successful and sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone.

Fast forward through struggles of every rock band, including lineup changes, and several more albums, and Snow Patrol still is one of the top trending alternative rock bands of the moment. The band's trimmed down to just Lightbody, Connolly, and Johnny McDaid, but they're still making music their way with "The Forest Is the Path."

From pub gigs to Grammy nominations, it's quite a ride for a band that almost didn't make it past those early struggles.
