Twenty One Pilots Biography

Twenty One Pilots, sometimes written stylized as twenty øne piløts or abbreviated as TØP, is an American alternative hip hop group. They were formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The founding members were lead vocalist, keyboardist, and producer Tyler Joseph (born in 1988 in Columbus, Ohio), bassist and backing vocalist Nick Thomas, and drummer Chris Salih.

Joseph originally met Thomas at youth basketball practice. Thomas later ended up transferring to Joseph’s middle school and the two became close friends. In the meantime, Joseph started making his music on an old keyboard he found in his closet. In 2007, he recorded a self-produced album called “No Phun Intended”. Thomas played the guitar on many of the tracks.

While attending Ohio State University, Joseph met Salih at a party. Sharing a passion of making music, the two decided to form a band - that remained unnamed at the time. Joseph’s childhood friend Thomas was also invited to join. The new posse started doing the earliest version of Twenty One Pilot concert shows around their campus, playing a wide variety of genres and styles. In December 2009, they released their self-titled debut album, “Twenty One Pilots”, under the band’s new name. The name comes from an Arthur Miller play “All My Sons”, in which the protagonist commits suicide after causing the death of 21 pilots in World War 2. The album became a moderate hit, peaking at #139 on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. They also kept participating in “Battle of the Bands” contests across the country.

2011 brought a huge change in TØP’s life. Despite the band’s relative success, two of the three co-founders, Thomas and Salih left to focus on careers outside music. However, Salih recruited his friend and former co-worker Josh Dun to fill his place as the drummer. Thus, the alt hip hop trio was reduced to a duo, but they kept going. They put out their second album, “Regional at Best”, in July 2011. Unlike their first one, this record failed to chart in the US. However, their third one, “Vessel” from January 2013, became a hit. It was published by the label Fueled by Ramen - this record was one of the first releases by the company that generated major commercial success. The album ended up peaking at #21 on Billboard 200.

Twenty One Pilots’ best selling album to date is “Blurryface” from May 2015, which ended up selling around 6.5 million copies worldwide. Since then, they put out two more records, “Trench” in October 2018, and the latest new Twenty One Pilots album, “Scaled and Icy” in May 2021. The biggest hits in the Twenty One Pilots setlist to date are “Stressed Out” (2015), “Ride” (also 2015), “Heathens” (2016, featured on the soundtrack of the superhero movie “Suicide Squad”), and “Chlorine” (2018).
