The 1975 Biography
The 1975 is a British pop rock band. They were formed in 2002 in Wilmslow, United Kingdom. The founders and only members to ever be part of the band are lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew "Matty" Healy (born in 1989 in London, United Kingdom), lead guitarist Adam Hann (1988, Manchester, United Kingdom), bassist Ross MacDonald (1989, United Kingdom), and drummer George Daniel (1992, Brussels, Belgium).
The 4 founders all went to the same high school in Wilmslow, England. There, they started playing music with each other in 2002, originally only playing cover songs. A local council member organized live performances for them in the area. Their original singer, Elliot Williams, left the group, so Healy took over the duties of the lead vocalist, who was the drummer initially. Daniel was brought in to play the drums. Williams later became the keyboardist for the indie rock band Editors.
The band performed under a whole slew of names before settling on “The 1975”. According to Healy, they named the band after some deranged scribbling they found in a copy of the novel “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, which was dated as “1 June, The 1975”.
They spent close to decade performing live, opening for bands such as The Neighborhood and The Rolling Stones, and releasing EP’s (Extended Plays), before putting out their debut album. And it was worth the wait, as the self-titled “The 1975”, released in September 2013, ended up topping the OCC chart in the UK, while also peaking at the #28 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list in the US.
Since then, the English pop rock band has released 3 more studio albums, thus they have 4 in total. The best selling one among them has remained their first one so far, “The 1975” from 2013, which sold around 1.6 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, their latest record is set to come out in October 2022, with the odd title “Being Funny in a Foreign Language”.
The 1975’s biggest hits to date are “Robbers” (2013), “Girls” (also 2013), “Somebody Else” (2016), and “The Sound” (also 2016).
