Korn Biography

Korn, sometimes spelled stylized as KoЯn or KoRn, is an American nu metal band. They were founded in 1993 in Bakersfield, California. The founding members were guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer (born in 1970 in Rosedale, California), bassist Reginald Arvizu (1969, Bakersfield, California), and drummer David Silveria (1972, San Leandro, California).

Before forming Korn, the three founders were all part of the funk metal band L.A.P.D., along with a singer named Richard Morrill. They released their first album titled “Who’s Laughing Now” in May 1991. After the release of their second album, however, they broke up.

Searching for new opportunities, Shaffer, Arvizu, and Silveria decided to form the new band “Korn”, and recruited lead singer Jonathan Davis and guitarist Brian Welch to complete the band line-up. While they were recording their demo tape, “Neidermayer's Mind”, in a studio in Huntington Beach, California, a fascinated crowd gathered in front of the studio to listen to an early impromptu Korn concert. The band went on tour for the first time in the summer of 1993.

Their self-titled debut album, “Korn”, came out in October 1994. It was published by Immortal and Epic Records. Despite the dark themes in the lyrics of the songs, such as child abuse and drug problems, it became a success, peaking at the #72 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

Since then, the Californian metal group has released 13 more studio albums, thus they have 14 in total. The best selling among them so far has been their third one, “Follow the Leader”, from August 1998, which sold over 5.5 million copies. Meanwhile, the new Korn album was released in February 2022, with the title “Requiem”. Korn’s biggest hits to date are “Freak on a Leash” (1998), “Got the Life” (also 1998), “Falling Away from Me” (1999), and “Coming Undone” (2005).

After almost 30 years since their formation, the band is still together and active, touring and recording new music. Their current line-up is made up of two of the three co-founders, Shaffer and Arvizu, their original lead singer Davis and the original lead guitarist Welch, as well as drummer Ray Luzier. The original drummer, Silveria, left the band in 2006. After a few temporary solutions, Luzier was added to the line-up permanently in 2009.
