Marc Anthony Biography

Marco Antonio Muñiz Rivera, better known by his stage name Marc Anthony, is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on September 16, 1968 in New York City, New York. Anthony grew up with Puerto Rican parents in the Spanish speaking part of Harlem. His father was a professional guitarist, who taught his young son how to sing at a very early age. Anthony’s biggest early musical influence was the Latin jazz musician from Puerto Rico, Tito Puente.

In his 20’s, Anthony made his living as a backup vocalist for miscellaneous New York-based small-time bands. He later got gigs with bigger acts, the Latin pop groups Menudo and the Latin Rascals. Around that time, he picked up his stage name “Marc Anthony” to avoid confusion with a namesake musician.

In 1988, he released his debut album, the Latin freestyle music record “Rebel” through Bluedog Records. While it never became a commercial success, it did lead to him getting bigger gigs down the road. This ultimately culminated in him signing with RMM Records. After some reluctance, Anthony agreed to produce a salsa album with them. That album eventually came out in January 1993, with the title “Otra Nota” (meaning “Another Note” in English). It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #30 spot on Billboard’s Latin Albums list upon its release. In 1995, Anthony won the “Hot Tropical Artist of the Year” award by Billboard Magazine. In 2005, he went on his first nationwide Marc Anthony concert tour with Alejandro Fernández, called the "Juntos en concierto 2005" ("Together in Concert 2005").

During his long career, Anthony has released a total of 13 full studio albums. The best selling one so far has been his self-titled record from September 1999, which sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Marc Anthony album came out in 2022, with the title “Pa'llá Voy” (“Here I Go”).

Marc Anthony's biggest hits to date are “Ahora Quien” (“Now Who”, 2004), “Vivir Mi Vida” (“Live My Life”, 2013), and “Flor Pálida” (“Pale Flower”, also 2013). He was also featured on the 2012 hit track by Cuban-American rapper Pitbull “Rain Over Me”.

Anthony is by far the best selling salsa singer of all time, having sold over 12 million albums combined. He also has a decent acting career, having appeared in such movies as “Man on Fire” (2004), or “In the Heights” (2021), as well as on the Broadway musical theater production “The Capeman” in 1998.
