Carlos Vives Biography
Picture an actor in Colombian soap operas who'd already struck out with three ballad albums, then stumbled into his destiny playing a vallenato composer on TV. That's how Carlos Vives found his true voice, turning from telenovela heartthrob to the man who would revolutionize Latino music. Born in Santa Marta in 1961, Vives did the unthinkable in 1993—he dared to mix vallenato with rock and pop on "Clásicos de la Provincia." The purists were outraged, but the people? They couldn't get enough.
He wasn't just making music; he was creating "vallenato-pop," a whole new sound that would help put Colombian music on the global map. Twenty million records later, he's collaborated with everyone from Shakira on "La Bicicleta" to Ricky Martin on "Canción Bonita." Even Disney came calling, having him sing "Colombia, Mi Encanto" for their hit film.
Not bad for a guy who started out in rock bands after moving to Bogotá at 12! As for Carlos' personal life, picture an actor in Colombian soap operas who'd already struck out with three ballad albums, then stumbled into his destiny playing a vallenato composer on TV.
