Picture a nine-year-old boy in Puerto Rico, hamming it up in TV commercials – that's where Ricky Martin's story begins. Born Enrique Martín Morales, later famous by his stage-name, Ricky Martin, he was born to an accountant mom and psychologist dad, little "Kiki" (as his family called him) was already showing signs of the superstar he'd become. While splitting time between his divorced parents' homes, he'd belt out tunes inspired by everything from local boy band Menudo to hard rock. After starring in nearly a dozen commercials, twelve-year-old Ricky landed a spot in Menudo itself. By 17, he'd had enough of the boy band life and headed to the Big Apple to taste freedom. NYU's prestigious Tisch School wanted him, but Mexico City's bright lights called louder. He jumped into musical theater with "Mama Ama el Rock" and scored roles in telenovelas. Then came his first record deal with Sony Discos – though he probably should've read the fine print, considering he only made a penny per album! Still, his self-titled debut hit the ground running, and "Me Amaras" followed, selling like hotcakes across Latin America. The mid-'90s saw Ricky trying his hand at American TV on "General Hospital" (his accent gave him some headaches, but fans ate it up). Then came "A Medio Vivir" in '95, and boom – "María" exploded across Europe like wildfire, topping charts in 20 countries.

Remember 1999? That's when "Livin' la Vida Loca" turned Ricky into a global phenomenon, kicking off what folks called the "Latin explosion". He kept the momentum going with "Sound Loaded" in 2000, teaming up with Christina Aguilera. Fast forward to 2011, and he's still breaking records – "Música + Alma + Sexo" became the highest-charting Spanish-language album of the 2010s in the US. He showed off his acting chops on "Glee", killed it as Ché in "Evita" on Broadway, and even picked up a Tony nomination.
