María José Biography
Dancing already on stage at 14 with a professional Spanish dance company. That marked the beginning of her own professional dancing career for María José, dancing her heart out in the early '90s. Mexican queen that she was, this was only just the beginning for her, however - soon, she would be making waves on the music front as well.
At 15, she joined a band called Kabah and spent the next decade helping them become one of Mexico's biggest pop groups. But here's where it gets interesting - instead of just riding that wave, she decided to get her communications degree while still performing. Once she left Kabah in 2006, María José was on her own and started taking some extremely, extremely bold moves. She opened for Gwen Stefani in Mexico (go from viewing No Doubt vids to being on stage with their lead vocalist!), and even starred in a musical featuring the songs of Spanish legend Mecano.
Her solo career in seriousness began with cover albums like "Amante de lo Ajeno" in 2009, where she reinterpreted '80s pop diva classics in her style. The fans lapped it up, especially her rendition of "No soy una señora," which was a Mexican teen chart-topper. She had come out with six albums by 2019 and was slaying on television too. She judged "México tiene talento" (Mexican Got Talent) and "La Voz" (The Voice Mexico) alongside celebrities Belinda and Ricardo Montaner.
The most beautiful thing about María José is that she renews herself every minute - flamenco dancer, then pop group singer, then solo singer, then TV celebrity. She's the Mexican Madonna, changing constantly but with that passion which led people to believe her the first time.
Fun fact: San Francisco became so enamored with her that they declared a day in her name - February 6th is now officially "María José Day" in the city. Not half bad for a dancer who began as a performer with a Spanish dance troupe, huh?
