You may not know her name here in America, but across the ocean in France, Mylène Farmer is nothing short of a musical phenomenon. Since she burst onto the scene in the 1980s, she's captivated millions with her unique voice and bold artistic vision. Born Mylène Gautier in Quebec back in '61, she's gone on to sell more than 30 million records worldwide. As far as French chart success goes, she is in a league of her own, having hit the number one mark 21 times and an unbelievable eight times back-to-back.

Though she started life in Canada, Farmer's story really began when her French parents moved the family to Chaville, just outside Paris. There, she chased her early dreams of modeling and acting before finding her true calling in music. Her first single "Maman a tort" in 1984 turned heads, but it wasn't until 1988 that she really hit her stride. That's when "Ainsi soit je..." took France by storm, racking up 1.5 million sales and giving her that first taste of number-one success with "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces."

Just when you thought she couldn't go bigger, her third album "L'autre..." blew past all expectations, selling two million copies. It gave us "Désenchantée" - the song that would become her calling card and define French pop music for a generation.

By '95, Farmer was ready to shake things up. She flew to the States to record "Anamorphosée," trading in her synth-pop roots for a grittier sound packed with live instruments and R&B flavors. Four years later, she flipped the script again with "Innamoramento," diving back into electronic music but with a fresh twist.

During the 2000s, Farmer kept everyone guessing. She'd give us intimate acoustic pop one minute, and then she'd drop an electronic masterpiece ("Point de suture") the next. In 2010, she circled back around with "Bleu noir," bringing back that moody synth-pop magic that first made us fall in love with her. In 2015, she still brought the fire-"Interstellaires" went straight to number one, driven by the knockout duet with Sting, "Stolen Car." The 2018 album "Désobéissance" proved she hadn't lost her touch, debuting atop and selling over 265k copies.
