Orelsan Biography
Orelsan is the stage name of the French rapper, songwriter, record producer, actor, and film director Aurélien Cotentin, born in Alençon, Normandy. Raised in a family of educators, he discovered rap music within his basketball group. He went on to attend the École de management de Normandie, where he met Skread, a record producer, and Gringe, a future partner in music.
In 2006, he started releasing music online, which quickly gained popularity on YouTube. In 2009, he released his debut album "Perdu d'avance," which led to him winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best French Act, beating the legendary EDM DJ and producer, David Guetta, in the process.
In the same year, some of his early online work led to a scandal involving misogynistic lyrics, which led to political repercussions and an effort to ban his concerts. In the end, he decided to remove those songs from his repertoire. In 2014, all of the charges against him were dismissed. In 2011, his second album, "Le chant des sirènes," sold double platinum and won two Victoire de la Musique awards.
He also formed a duo with Gringe under the name Casseurs Flowters, releasing an album and a film in 2015, "Comment c'est loin." In 2017, the real turning point in his music career began with the release of his third album, "La fête est finie," which went gold in the first three days of its release and eventually sold double diamond, selling over a million copies in France.
In 2021, his fourth album, "Civilisation," broke all records for the fastest French rap album to go diamond and sold the most in the first week of its release. In 2023, he won twelve Victoire de la Musique awards, beating French music legends such as the famous singer Johnny Hallyday. In 2022, the French Ministry of Culture named him Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, making him one of the most important artists in French music today.
