Sarah Brightman went from disco dancer to West End star to space training, and that's just scratching the surface. This kid from Berkhamsted started taking dance classes at three, and by 13, she was already on London's West End stage. But it was joining Hot Gossip that first put her on the map - remember "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper"? Pure disco gold that hit number six in the UK.
Then comes the game-changer: Andrew Lloyd Webber spots her in a show and boom - suddenly she's Christine in "Phantom of the Opera", a role literally written for her. The cast album did something unheard of - 40 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest-selling cast album ever. Not bad for a girl who started in disco!
But Brightman wasn't about to be defined by musical theater. After splitting with Lloyd Webber, she reinvents herself with producer Frank Peterson, pioneering classical crossover before it was cool. Her duet with Andrea Bocelli, "Time to Say Goodbye", becomes one of the best-selling singles ever - 12 million copies and 14 weeks at number one in Germany. That's what you call a comeback.
In Barcelona '92 and Beijing '08, she became the first artist to play at two different Olympic Games, thereby reaching a total audience of billions. And when you think that you've finally got this girl figured out - she decides to train for space! Though she didn't get on the rocket to the International Space Station in the end, this experience inspired "Dreamchaser", which is probably one of her most acclaimed albums so far.
The numbers tell their own story - 25 million albums, 2 million DVDs, over 200 gold and platinum awards in 38 countries. But it's her voice that really sets her apart - she can switch from pop to classical mid-song, hitting notes most singers only dream about.
These days, she's still pushing boundaries - whether she's judging talent shows in Japan or preparing to play Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" in Australia, Brightman keeps proving there's no such thing as impossible. From disco diva to space dreamer, she's living proof that the best careers don't follow a script.
