Formed in Chicago, USA, The Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band very influential within the alt-rock community. The Smashing Pumpkins got their popularity by mixing gothic rock with heavy metal, which was very popular on the underground scene but quickly emerged into the mainstream. The band's debut album is called "Gish" and it was also first popular among underground music lovers. The Smashing Pumpkins is also known for their internal conflicts, which resulted in a breakup in the early 2000s. Despite that, the alt-rock band is extremely successful and as of 2024, sold over 30 million albums worldwide.
After some bad results with an early band, Billy Corgan moved to Chicago and met James Iha. Quickly, the two young geniuses felt a connection and decided to start The Smashing Pumpkins. In the beginning, Corgan and Iha had bands like The Cure and New Order as their main influences. After meeting bassist D'arcy Wretzky and the jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the band was 100% formed.
In 1992 the alt-rock business was booming, and that is because of bands like Pearl Jam and even Nirvana. The Smashing Pumpkins saw that business opportunity and set their way. "Siamese Dream," was one of the most successful albums done by The Smashing Pumpkins, and the album alone sold over 4 million copies. Despite the success, The band faced criticism from the indie community but remained influential. In 1994, they released "Pisces Iscariot," which charted even higher.
In 1995, the band released "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," a double album with 28 tracks. The album was more successful than "Siamese Dream," going ten times platinum in the U.S. and earning seven Grammy nominations. The success of the album led to a world tour in 1996.
In 1997, the band decided to change their style a little bit, going from grunge-influence rock to something with electronic involved. The unique style, made the band create "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" to the "Batman & Robin" soundtrack.
In 2003, throughout successful albums, struggles, internal conflicts and everything that comes with the package of a rock band, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin formed the supergroup Zwan, releasing "Mary Star of the Sea" in 2003 before disbanding. In 2009, Jimmy Chamberlin left the band. Quickly after that, the group announced that 19-year-old Mike Byrne, former drummer for Spirits in the Sky, had replaced Jimmy Chamberlin, and they were working on new recordings.
More recently, in 2020, Billy Corgan announced that The Smashing Pumpkins were working on a double album, a sequel to "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" and "Machina: The Machines of God." The double album was titled "Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts," and it was released split in two parts in 2022 and 2023.
The Smashing Pumpkins have announced their "Rats in a Cage Tour," celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness."
