The Waterboys are a rock band formed in London, England, in 1983 by Scottish musician and songwriter Mike Scott, who remains the group's only constant member across a four-decade career built on constant reinvention. Blending rock, folk, and Celtic influences, the band's early anthemic sound — dubbed "The Big Music" after a song of the same name — drew comparisons to U2 and helped define a style embraced by a wider circle of similarly expansive '80s rock acts.
After three albums built on that sweeping sound, Scott relocated to Dublin and later rural Spiddal, immersing himself in Irish traditional music alongside violinist Steve Wickham. That shift produced Fisherman's Blues (1988), now considered one of the band's defining records, followed by the more folk-heavy Room to Roam (1990).
The band dissolved in 1993 after the harder-rocking Dream Harder, with Scott pursuing a solo career before reviving the Waterboys name in 2000 for A Rock in the Weary Land, an album inspired by Radiohead and Beck.
Since reforming, the band has moved fluidly between styles — recording An Appointment with Mr Yeats (2011), a full album setting W.B.
Yeats's poetry to music, then pivoting toward American soul, blues, and funk on records like Modern Blues (2015) and Out of All This Blue (2017). Their most recent album, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper (2025), a concept record about the actor, featured guest turns from Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, and Fiona Apple.
