Formed in San Francisco in 1993, Third Eye Blind's road to success wasn't exactly linear. Countless lineup changes plagued the band throughout the early and mid-90s before finally settling down. But with their self-titled debut finally releasing in 1997, it became the tidal wave everyone expected: songs such as "Semi-Charmed Life", "Jumper", and "How's It Going to Be" ruled the airwaves and served as cultural yard markers as the album reached six times platinum status.
Their follow-up, 1999's "Blue", proved they weren't some flash in the pan one-album wonder as it went platinum and popped out singles like "Never Let You Go". But along with success came a price: in-band tensions that ultimately caused Cadogan's contentious exit in 2000, which basically marked the end of the golden era for this lineup.
The next 15 years were indeed choppy waters for Third Eye Blind, with rotating members and long spans between albums. They brought in guitarist Tony Fredianelli for "Out of the Vein" in 2003 and "Ursa Major" in 2009 but he too would eventually part ways with the group. By the mid-2010s, Jenkins and Hargreaves remained from its core, but finding stability with its new members Kryz Reid on lead guitar, Alex Kopp handling keyboards, and Alex LeCavalier laying down the bass lines.
This refreshed lineup sparked a creative renaissance. They picked up the pace with "Dopamine" (2015), followed by a string of EPs - "We Are Drugs" (2016) and "Thanks for Everything" (2018). When Kopp stepped aside for Colin Creev, they kept the momentum going with "Screamer" (2019) and "Our Bande Apart" (2021).
When Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan inked their deal with Elektra Records back in 1996, little did they know they were about to create one of the most memorable soundtracks of the late '90s. Equipped with dynamic Arion Salazar bass grooves, along with pounding Brad Hargreaves drums, the two would mold a sound designed to sell 12 million albums worldwide.
