Blackbear’s journey began in the punk rock scene of Daytona Beach, but it didn’t stop there—he went on to become a trailblazer in monetizing music streaming. Born Matthew Tyler Musto, he first fell in love with music in fourth grade, thanks to bands like Rancid and Blink-182. That early passion set him on a course that would take him across genres and reshape what success looks like in the digital era.
As the frontman of pop punk band Polaroid, teenage Musto was already showing his dedication, dropping out in tenth grade to chase his musical dreams. After the band split, he headed to Atlanta to work with Ne-Yo, marking his first steps toward a solo career. But it was co-writing Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" in 2012 that really opened doors, hitting number two on Billboard and establishing him as a serious industry player.
With the stage name Blackbear, he became one of the pioneering independent artists who monetized streaming on SoundCloud back in 2014. He released his debut album "Deadroses" in 2015, but it was the song "Idfc" that brought him to the fore. Every subsequent release marked an evolution in his artistry, from the emotionally raw "Help" to the fully fleshed-out production in "Digital Druglord."
He's continually updated his sound, moving through R&B-influenced beginnings to trap-pop hits such as "Hot Girl Bummer," which reached six times platinum. Having worked with everyone, from Machine Gun Kelly to Ellie Goulding, he returned to rock roots on 2022's "In Loving Memory" featuring Travis Barker and pop-punk legends. It showed that he could fuse together his modern style with the genre that initially inspired him.
In 2023, Blackbear worked again with Posner and dropped "Mansionz 2." The music star has kept true to his style, lacing incisive lyrics with innovative beats that refuse to be placed in any particular genre. It is a trademark that has kept Blackbear among the most versatile artists currently running the scene.
