Counting Crows Biography
Counting Crows is an American rock band. They were formed in 1991 in San Francisco, California. The founding members were lead vocalist and keyboardist Adam Duritz (born in 1964 in Baltimore, Maryland), and rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist David Bryson (1961).
Duritz used to be the lead vocalist for the San Francisco-based band “The Himalayas”. However, that band dismantled after just 1 year of existence in 1991. So, Duritz teamed up with producer-guitarist Bryson to form an acoustic musical duo. They named themselves “Counting Crows” after an alteration to the British nursery rhyme “One for Sorrow”, which is about the superstition of counting magpies. The new duo started doing early Counting Crows concert shows in small venues around Berkeley and San Francisco. They would often be joined by other local musicians at their gigs. They started recording demo tapes, while also adding bassist Matt Malley, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, and drummer Steve Bowman permanently to their line-up.
One of their demo tapes impressed a person at Geffen Records, which resulted in the band signing with the label in 1992. The next year, they got to do a live Counting Crows concert at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in Los Angeles, filling in for the new inductee Van Morrison who couldn’t make it to the event.
The Counting Crows debut album came out in September 1993, with the title “August and Everything After”. It became a massive hit, peaking at the #4 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Their next record, “Recovering the Satellites” from October 1996, managed to outperform even that, not stopping till reaching #1 on the famous albums chart.
Since then, the Californian rock band has released 5 more full studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. Despite the lower chart position, their best selling album is the first one, “August and Everything After”, which sold over 8 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, their latest record came out in September 2014, with the title “Somewhere Under Wonderland”. A new Counting Crows album is expected to be released in the near future, an expansion to their 2021 EP “Butter Miracle, Suite One”.
The biggest hits in the Counting Crows setlist to date are “Mr. Jones” (1993), “Round Here” (also 1993), “A Long December” (1996), and “Big Yellow Taxi” (2002). After quite a few changes in the band’s line-up over the years, it now consists of the two co-founders, lead singer Duritz, and rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Bryson, as well as keyboardist Gillingham, lead guitarist Dan Vickrey, second guitarist David Immerglück, drummer Jim Bogios, and bassist Millard Powers. In 2004, they were nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Original Song category for a song they wrote for the animated movie Shrek 2’s soundtrack.
