Born in 1980 into a family of musicians and intellectuals, Ibrahim Maalouf took very early first steps toward becoming one of the most innovative trumpeters in the world. As a child running away from civil war in Lebanon, he moved to Paris, where his father, Nassim himself an accomplished trumpeter, began teaching him at age seven. But what really set this education apart was his father's invention-the quarter-tone trumpet-designed to play Arabic maqams, the traditional Middle Eastern scales impossible on conventional instruments.
As an adolescent, Maalouf toured Europe and the Middle East with his father playing baroque on trumpets by Bach and Vivaldi. He had begun university studies in mathematics and science when the great trumpeter Maurice André urged him to change direction and dedicate himself to music. He would later attend the prestigious Conservatoire de Paris for five years, building a career spanning from classical via jazz to Arabic.
His breakthrough came in 2007 with the self-released debut album "Diasporas." What set Maalouf apart from his generation of trumpet players wasn't only the technical mastery that he had reached but his very personal blend of Middle Eastern musical heritage and state-of-the-art styles, ranging from jazz and rock to electro. This strange marriage of genres brought artists of different styles to his door, and thus, the collaborations began to flow: Sting, Salif Keita, and so on.
Until the day he was discovered at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2017 by no less a person than Quincy Jones, it spoke to an ever-broader audience. He then appeared at the Louvre Abu Dhabi inauguration during the same period, serving so aptly to symbolize cultural bridging. His social consciousness came out in 2015 when he composed a tribute for victims of the Paris terrorist attacks; the following year, he sang the French national anthem at the Eiffel Tower for millions.
Until the release of the 2022 album "Capacity to Love," featuring everyone from Gregory Porter to Sharon Stone, Maalouf has just released his 16th album. Through all this, however, Maalouf continued to be heavily involved in music education: first teaching improvisation at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, then performing master classes the world over.
