In Flames Biography
In Flames, a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 1990, pioneered melodic death metal alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The band's lineup has changed over time, with vocalist Anders Fridén and guitarist Björn Gelotte being the only consistent members since 1995. Their 2002 album "Reroute to Remain" marked a shift towards alternative metal, which was criticized by some fans but increased their mainstream audience. In Flames has released fourteen studio albums, with their latest being "Foregone" in 2023, and has won seven Swedish Grammis Awards.
In Flames was founded by Jesper Strömblad as a side project to write more melodic music compared to his death metal band, Ceremonial Oath. In 1993, Strömblad left Ceremonial Oath and recruited Glenn Ljungström and Johan Larsson to form the first official In Flames lineup. They recorded a demo and signed with Wrong Again Records, then released their debut album "Lunar Strain" in 1994 with session vocals by Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity. In 1994, they recorded the self-produced EP "Subterranean" with session vocals by Henke Forss, which led to a deal with a major record label. In 1995, In Flames recruited Björn Gelotte as their full-time drummer and Anders Fridén as their vocalist. They recorded their second album, "The Jester Race", in 1996 with co-production by Fredrik Nordström.
In 1997, they released their third album, "Whoracle", after which guitarist Glenn Ljungström and bassist Johan Larsson left the band. Niklas Engelin and Peter Iwers filled in during a tour with Dimmu Borgir and later joined as permanent members. After a European tour in 1998, Engelin quit, so Gelotte switched to guitar and Daniel Svensson became the new drummer.
In 1999, In Flames recorded and released their fourth album, "Colony", and toured Europe, Japan, and played their first US show at the Milwaukee Metal Fest after that. In 2000, they released their fifth album, "Clayman", and toured with Dream Theater, Slipknot, and Testament. "The Tokyo Showdown", a live album, was released in 2001. Their sixth album, "Reroute to Remain", was released in 2002.
In 2005, they recorded and self-produced their eighth album, "Come Clarity", they also released the live box set "Used and Abused: In Live We Trust" and signed a new deal. "Come Clarity" was released in 2006, becoming their first No. 1 album in Sweden. They toured with the thrash metal band Sepultura, and co-headlined with Lacuna Coil. Fast forward to 2016, the band recorded their twelfth studio album, "Battles", in LA, they also announced Joe Rickard as their new permanent drummer, replacing Daniel Svensson. After the "Battles" tour, bassist Peter Iwers left the band, leaving only Anders Fridén and Björn Gelotte as the remaining members from the 1990s lineup. Håkan Skoger and Bryce Paul filled in on bass for live performances.
In 2017, they released the "Down, Wicked, and No Good" EP with three covers and a live performance. In 2018, Tanner Wayne was announced as the new drummer, replacing Rickard. In early 2022, In Flames announced their own festival called "Dalhalla Brinner", which took place at the Dalhalla open air theater. The opening acts for the festival were Orbit Culture, Lorna Shore, and Tesseract.
